Getting started – advice from Glenn Lucas on what you need to woodturn

  1. Workspace – preferably with concrete floor

5. Tools.

  • FACE PLATE OR BOWL TURNING tools (long handles)
    •   ⅝” bar ∅ bowl gouge (GL4)
    • French curve negative rake scraper 1 ⅜” x ⅜” (GL1)
    • 1″ radius edge skew chisel (GL9)
  • SPINDLE TURNING tools (10 inch shorter handles)
    •  ¾” Spindle Roughing Gouge (HCT064 )
    • ⅛” Parting Tool (HCT090)
    •   1″ radius edge skew chisel (GL9)
    • ⅜” Beading and Parting Tool (HCT095)
    • ⅜” spindle gouge (GL8)
  1. Sharpening system
  • slow speed water-cooled system ( Tormek T4 or T7)
  • bench grinder – with flat tool rest and sharpening jigs
  1. Wood
  • off-cuts from local cabinet-maker
